Rotterdam Port "Unusually Congested"
According to a customer notice released last week by HMM (Hyundai Merchant Marine), ships at the World Gateway terminal of the Port of Rotterdam, Europe's largest port, have to wait up to 10 days to berth. Another major terminal of the port, the ECT terminal, only requires late-arriving ships to wait for 2 days, but it is facing issues such as insufficient worker attendance rates and truck waiting times during peak hours far exceeding the norm.
On July 22, the Port of Rotterdam admitted to "unusual congestion," with the main backlog occurring in the landside operations.
The port authorities of Rotterdam stated: "A combination of factors has led to extended waiting times for landside operations at the deep-sea terminals - including the transition of old and new schedules (route adjustments), the concentration of large vessels arriving at the port, the reorganization of shipping alliances, operational disruptions, and the impact of severe weather at the beginning of the year."

Antwerp-Bruges Port Under Congestion Pressure
The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is also facing operational pressure. The container throughput of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium increased by 3.7% year-on-year in the first half of this year, reaching 6.91 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), but the continuously growing freight volume has exacerbated the congestion problems caused by the insufficient landside space.
The HMM notice showed that the average waiting time for ships at the Noordzee terminal was 1.5 days. Although the company stated that the cargo dwell time is gradually improving, it also pointed out that the storage period for the terminal yard to receive containers has been shortened from 7 days to 5 days.
Similar to the Port of Rotterdam, the Port of Antwerp is also suffering from severe truck congestion outside the port area. The port attributes the current difficulties to multiple factors, including several labor strikes in recent months and supply chain adjustments.
