On August 12, Splash 247 reported that Evergreen has told clients that any omission, concealment or misdeclaration of hazardous cargoes that it finds will result in fines of $35,000 per container. A host of other carriers have also issued warnings to clients this month of fines for misdeclared cargoes.

On August 12, Hellenic Shipping News reported that China’s coastal bulk freight market saw an overall decline in demand in July, with the composite index for coastal bulk freight dropping 6 percent month on month to 977.26.

On August 15, Seatrade Maritime News reported that COSCO, the operator of Greece’s Piraeus Port Authority (PPA), plans to build a fourth container pier, expanding the port’s capacity to over 10m teu and making it comparable to the biggest Northern European ports.
