It is reported that the shipping agency GAC reported that a container ship ran aground at 7: 40 am local time on Tuesday (March 23), which caused two-way traffic jam in Suez Canal.
This accident may have a negligible impact on the container shipping industry, even the whole shipping industry, which has already fallen into the bottleneck of supply chain.
According to the data of World Shipping Council, nearly 50 ships pass through the canal every day, and the average time to pass through the 119-mile Suez Canal is 14 hours. It is said that there were 15 ships stuck behind the container ship "Evergiven".
According to the information on the website of vesselfinder, a container ship "Evergiven" of Evergreen Group in Taiwan Province, China, had an accident when passing through Suez Canal on its way to the Netherlands. It was stuck in the canal horizontally, blocking the two-way traffic for more than 10 hours.
The Egyptian government is organizing local forces to carry out rescue, but the size of the ship makes it a daunting task. Affected by this accident, a large number of freighters and various types of ships have been blocked around Suez Canal.
EVERGREEN Group, headquartered in Zhongshan District, Taipei City, was established in 1968. With the transportation industry as its core, the range of its business includes shipping, aviation and land transportation. The freighter "Evergiven" is a ultra-large container ship with a maximum loading capacity of about 200,000 tons and can carry more than 20,000 TEUs. The ship was completed in 2018, with a length of 400 meters, a width of 59 meters and a draft of about 16 meters. It flies Panama flag.
It is reported that it is not the first time that the container ship "Evergiven" has encountered an accident. In February 2019,the ship had a serious collision on the Elbe River in Hamburg Port, Germany . The ULCS crashed into a ferry moored at Blankness Wharf while sailing on the Elbe River. The ferry is called "Finkenwerder", which is relatively short and about 25 meters long.
After the crash, Evergreen failed to stop sailing immediately because of inertia of ship or unawareness of the collision accident. Fortunately, there were no passengers on the ferry at that time. The captain and two crew members abandoned the ship and evacuated immediately after the accident.
The ferry was flattened, with windows and doors broken and hinges bent. A crack above the waterline also found by firefighters. However the culprit ULCS was only worn by paint.
