Asia Ports: Recovery Gains Traction in South China, While Selected Southeast Asian Ports Remain Under Pressure

Overall operational recovery across Asian ports has shown improvements this week. Even so, certain ports continue to grapple with vessel bunch-ups and container yard constraints.

In South China, operational disruptions triggered by earlier typhoons have gradually eased, with normal operations resumed at the Port of Shenzhen and other Pearl River Delta terminals. Nevertheless, prior schedule shifts, backlogged cargo and limited appointment resources have left partial terminals facing vessel waiting times and constrained container turnover. Full operational recovery has not yet been achieved.

For Southeast Asia, the Port of Manila in the Philippines remains a key area of concern. Disruptions caused by adverse weather previously led to concentrated vessel arrivals. Port backlogs are still being cleared, and ongoing schedule delays continue to undermine service reliability for regional shipping lanes.

Pressure at Malaysia’s Port Klang has eased to some extent, yet container yard utilisation stays relatively high. Past berth congestion stemming from concentrated carrier call-ins resulted in vessel waiting, so the pace of throughput recovery warrants ongoing monitoring.

Ports in Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau, still face operational headwinds, driven by rising export volumes, elevated yard utilisation and bottlenecks in landside transportation capacity.

Africa Ports: Persistent High Pressure at Beira, Slow Recovery Momentum

African ports continue to register some of the most notable congestion worldwide this week. Adverse weather and infrastructure limitations are slowing recovery progress.

Mozambique’s Port of Beira remains in recovery mode with prolonged vessel waiting times. Recovery work at terminals triggered by prior severe weather has not been completed, restraining terminal productivity. Significant vessel queuing has yet to see material improvement.

In West Africa, Tema (Ghana) and Apapa (Nigeria) are confronted with landside transport bottlenecks. Constrained porthinterland road access, trucking capacity and cargo clearance efficiency — rather than pure terminal capacity limits — extend vessel turnaround durations.

Mombasa in East Africa faces persistent challenges from yard congestion, equipment coordination hurdles and inland transport restrictions. As a key gateway port for East Africa, reduced efficiency at Mombasa may create ripple effects for import cargo flows across neighbouring economies.

Europe Ports: Mounting Bulk Cargo Pressure Amid Sustained Low-Water Levels

Major European ports maintain broadly stable operations this week; nonetheless, constraints on inland waterway shipping represent a prevailing risk factor.

  • Germany’s Port of Hamburg and Bremerhaven are coping with high container yard occupancy, alongside tight storage capacity for certain special cargo types. Moreover, rail capacity limitations hamper cargo movement between terminals and inland destinations.
  • Lowwater conditions along the Rhine and Danube Rivers constitute the dominant disruptive factor across Europe. Inland barges must sail with reduced load capacities, which undermines the transport efficiency of bulk commodities such as coal, ores and grain, and may generate additional transshipment burdens at ports.
  • The Port of Antwerp in Belgium operates stably, with impacts from past incidents fully resolved. Even so, stakeholders should keep track of equipment maintenance status, labour availability and schedule recovery progress.

Middle East Ports: Stable Terminal Operations, While Security Risks Shape Routing Decisions

Key Middle Eastern ports are functioning normally without material signs of congestion this week.

  • Major facilities including Fujairah, Jebel Ali and Khor Fakkan in the UAE report smooth berthing and cargo handling with minimal operational disruptions.
  • That said, shipping carriers remain highly alert to security concerns across the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz. Although port operations themselves remain unaffected, many carriers adopt more conservative routing strategies. Key considerations include rising insurance costs, potential diversion risks and schedule reliability.
  • Should regional security conditions deteriorate further, certain vessel call arrangements could be adjusted, and cargo volumes may shift toward alternative port hubs.

Americas Ports: Overall Stable Performance; Landside Logistics Under Observation for Mexican Terminals

Ports across the Americas deliver largely steady performance this week, with no substantial congestion reported at major North American gateways.

  • Selected Mexican ports face moderate pressures. At Lázaro Cárdenas and Manzanillo, yard utilisation levels, customs clearance workflows and landside logistics constrain cargo turnover, which requires continued oversight.
  • Recovery is still underway for Chilean ports following prior weatherrelated disruptions. Schedule readjustments and inland cargo backlogs have not been fully cleared.

Weekly Observation

Between 5 August and 11 August, global port congestion follows the pattern of localised pressure points amid broadly stable operations:

  • In Asia: Cargo backlogs stemming from earlier weather events keep receding, yet key regional hubs including Manila and Port Klang are still in recovery phases.
  • In Africa: Beira continues to operate under severe strain, while West and East African ports remain hampered by infrastructure shortfalls and landside logistics bottlenecks.
  • In Europe: Low-river-water conditions create meaningful headwinds for bulk commodity supply chains.
  • In the Middle East: Ports maintain normal throughput, yet security risks are reshaping carriers’operational strategies.

For ship owners and supply-chain operators, three developments merit close monitoring in the week ahead:

  1. The speed of backlog clearance at major Asian ports
  2. Whether congestion spreads further across African port facilities
  3. Potential impacts on vessel schedules and operational costs triggered by European low-water levels and MiddleEastern security risks

一是亚洲主要港口积压恢复速度;

二是非洲港口拥堵是否进一步扩大;
