Australian dockworkers are gearing up to strike at major bulk and general cargo ports with nearly unanimous support among workers at the Melbourne, Canberra, and Brisbane terminals.

The strike stems from unresolved negotiations on a new contract with the dock operators following the expiration of workers' contracts in June 2024. Over the past four years, workers have not seen their pay rise but experienced a 14% reduction in purchasing power, due to inflation while port profits have soared.

Chittagong Port in Bangladesh has faced severe congestion due to flooding. Over the past six weeks, ships have been facing significant delays, with dock times extending beyond five days compared to the usual two to three days required for cargo handling. As of September 5th, seven container ships were still waiting outside the port, with one ship being anchored for five days before it could dock on September 6th.

The situation at Chittagong Port has seen improvement, with ship waiting times reduced from nine days to four or five days. However, the port sees its yard storage space under considerable strain. Reports indicate that the port needs to clear 5,000 TEU of import containers and reduce 5,000 TEU of export containers to restore normal operation in over 15 days.
