Belgium hit by nationwide strike, port operations disrupted
On March 31, Belgian workers in both the public and private sectors launched a 24-hour nationwide strike in protest against the new coalition government's budget cuts, bringing multiple regions of the country to a standstill. Officials from the Port of Antwerp-Bruges stated that the disruption began on Sunday evening and was expected to last until Tuesday, with full recovery potentially taking several days.
Belgium's busiest ports, Antwerp and Zeebrugge, reported "significant obstacles" for vessels. As the strike continued, delays and backlogs worsened. On Monday, only about 10 vessels were able to enter or leave Antwerp Port throughout the day, with the number of backlogged vessels increasing to around 50. The three locks in Antwerp were closed. In a Monday evening update at 20:15, the port authorities stated, "Disruptions will continue until Tuesday morning. Staff are working quickly to clear the backlog of vessels. This is expected to take one to two days."
Zeebrugge Port reported that the port had been completely locked down since 11:00 and was expected to remain so until 07:00 on Tuesday. No vessels entered or left the port after Monday noon. Prior to this, one ship had departed, and two had arrived, but by the end of Monday, 25 vessels were waiting for the port to resume operations.
Congestion at Singapore and Port Klang
Linerlytica reported this week that Singapore and Port Klang have experienced delays of up to three days. Singapore Port, the world's second-largest container port and the busiest transshipment hub, has a moderate level of congestion, according to an assessment by SeaSearcher, the intelligence arm of Lloyd's Register. The main reason for the congestion is the unusually fierce Southeast Asian monsoon, which has brought nearly a week of heavy rain to the region, causing congestion at major container ports such as Singapore and Port Klang. This is the third monsoon peak in 2025 so far. Southeast Asian monsoons are typically strongest in the early stages of the northeast monsoon season from December to January. On average, Southeast Asia experiences up to four monsoon surges each year, each lasting from one to five days. On March 19, the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority issued a notice advising shipowners to remain vigilant during the monsoon surge period.
Mexico's two core Pacific coast ports face vessel congestion
Mexico's two core Pacific coast ports—Lazaro Cardenas and Manzanillo—are facing an increasingly serious vessel congestion dilemma. A surge in vessel numbers, especially the frequent arrival of ultra-large container ships, has led to tight berthing positions. Vessels have been upgraded to 12,000-16,000 TEUs, but port infrastructure has not been upgraded in tandem. Despite some positive indicators, infrastructure bottlenecks in Mexican ports have become a key constraint on industry development. Industry insiders point out that in the irreversible trend of vessel enlargement, accelerating port expansion and improving operational efficiency have become urgent priorities.
