Late at night on August 4, 2025, a collision occurred in the busy waters near Funen Island in the Danish Straits. A container ship with a capacity of 4,800 TEUs, owned by a global shipping giant, and a well-known car carrier collided in the Hatter Barn area near the entrance of the deep-water channel.

The accident caused structural damage to the parts of both ships above the waterline. Despite the visible damage, the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) reported in its preliminary statement that there have been no reports of fuel or other pollutant spills, which is a crucially positive sign for the sensitive maritime environment. To thoroughly assess potential risks, a team of professional divers has been deployed to conduct a comprehensive underwater inspection of the two ships, checking for any hidden damage or structural integrity issues below the waterline.

Following the accident, the Danish maritime authorities swiftly took action, exercising their legal powers to formally detain both vessels until the cause of the accident is fully investigated. A team of experienced inspectors and technical experts, confirmed by the DMA spokesperson, worked overnight immediately after the accident to conduct an intensive on-site inspection of the visible damage on both ships, continuing their work into the early morning of August 5. Currently, the car carrier has been instructed to anchor in a safe area northwest of Sejerø, near the collision site, while the container ship has been moved to a designated anchorage north of Fynshoved, near the entrance to Kalundborg Fjord.

According to the latest data from the Automatic Identification System (AIS), the container ship departed from Wilhelmshaven, Germany, with Gdansk, Poland, as its destination port. It is flying the Singaporean flag and mainly operates on North European feeder routes. Currently located in the Baltic Sea, the ship is sailing towards its destination port, Gdansk, at a speed of 17.4 knots, with an estimated arrival time of 22:30 local time on August 7.

The car carrier, which departed from Emden, Germany, is currently being towed to the Lindø Shipyard in Denmark for repairs. Built in 2006, the ship has a carrying capacity of 6,500 vehicles. Its shipowner reported that the vessel is currently chartered by Volkswagen.

Gdansk Port

The core competitiveness of Gdansk Port stems from its geographically advantageous location. The outer port area, situated directly in the waters of the Gulf of Gdansk, boasts deep-water terminal infrastructure capable of accommodating the world’s largest ships that pass through the Danish Straits. These ships can be up to 400 meters long, with a maximum draft of 15 meters, while the terminal waters have a depth of 17 meters. Among the more than 3,000 ships that call at Gdansk Port, the majority are single-entry vessels, known as charter entries.

However, shipowners whose vessels regularly call at our quays have the opportunity to receive appropriate discounts and sign agreements with Gdansk Port Authority S.A. (ZMPG S.A.) for long-term shipping connections. Regular shipping routes include Baltic and North Sea countries. The shipping network also covers North America, South America, Central America, and Asian countries.

Port Operations - General Cargo

All general cargo can be loaded and unloaded at the inner port and the outer port (DCT).

Gdansk Port consists of 14 quays and 41 berths, offering a variety of freight and passenger services. They are mainly distributed in two areas. The first is the inner port, located along the Vistula River and the port channel, which includes terminals for containers, ferries, roll-on/roll-off services, and various bulk cargoes. The second area is the outer port, located in the Gulf of Gdansk, which includes specialized terminals for fuel, coal, liquefied petroleum gas, and ore, as well as the Baltic Hub Container Terminal.

Main Types of Cargo Handled:

Liquid fuels (51%), general cargo and timber (30.3%), coal (10.1%), other bulk cargo (4.5%), grain (3.7%), and ore (0.4%). In terms of rail transport usage, the types of cargo that occupy the most rail transport are: bulk cargo (51.14%), containers (48.56%), and automobiles (0.30%).

Sister Port Relations and Interconnectivity

The Port of Ningbo Zhoushan is Gdansk Port’s largest trading partner in China. Since the signing of the sister port agreement in 2006, the volume of cargo between the two ports has continued to grow, reaching approximately 350,000 TEUs by 2024. Currently, there are four direct shipping routes and two shuttle routes between the two ports. Gdansk Port joined the Ningbo Initiative for Port Cooperation along the Maritime Silk Road in 2016 and has always been an active member of this cooperation network.

As one of Europe’s top ten ports and Poland’s largest port, Gdansk Port is an important gateway to the fast-growing economic region of Central and Eastern Europe. With its natural advantages of a 17-meter deep-water channel, ice-free year-round, and no tidal influence, as well as its well-developed land transportation network, the port handled 2.25 million TEUs in 2024 and is expected to see a 17% increase in 2025.

It is worth noting that Chinese goods account for 60% of the total container throughput at Gdansk Port. Due to Gdansk Port’s shortest route, fastest delivery time, and most economical transportation costs between the final destinations in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and western Ukraine, it offers the lowest cost for shipments between China and the Far East. Many Chinese companies use this port as an important gateway to the Polish, Czech, Slovak, and other Central and Eastern European markets. Gdansk Port is also involved in the construction of the “National Single Window.” It is understood that the system will soon be launched, providing a single declaration entry point for all ships calling at Gdansk Port.
