Category 5 Hurricane Nears Mexico’s Pacific Coast: Which Ports and Trade Routes Should Shipowners Watch?

On September 22, Hurricane Polo rapidly intensified to a Category 5 storm over the Pacific southwest of Mexico, with maximum sustained winds reaching around 285 km/h. The storm has remained nearly stationary and has become one of the strongest systems recorded in the eastern Pacific this year.

According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC), Polo is expected to continue moving slowly offshore over the next several days, with no indication at present of a direct landfall.

Based on the latest forecast track, the storm’s closest approach to the coast is expected to be around 345 km south of Zihuatanejo and approximately 570 km southeast of Manzanillo. Because of Polo’s slow movement, Mexico’s southwestern coast could continue to experience strong winds, heavy rainfall and long-period swells. Significant wave heights in the vicinity of the storm have already exceeded 4 metres, with higher seas possible in some areas.

Vessels scheduled to operate in the region over the next several days should closely monitor deteriorating sea conditions and port operations, particularly the effects of long-period swells and persistent rainfall.

For dry bulk and multipurpose vessel operators, these ports may not attract the same attention as major global shipping chokepoints such as the Panama Canal or Singapore Strait. Their importance, however, is growing within regional trade networks.

Based on the current forecast track, coastal areas of Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco are among those expected to see more significant effects from the storm. Local authorities have warned that some areas could receive 200–300 mm of rainfall, accompanied by risks of landslides and river flooding.

For shipping, Lázaro Cárdenas and Manzanillo are the two ports that warrant particular attention.

Located in Michoacán, Lázaro Cárdenas is one of Mexico’s major deep-water ports. In addition to container traffic, the port has a significant presence in bulk and general cargo, handling commodities including minerals, metals and other cargoes. The potential impact is not limited to domestic Mexican shipping.

Vessels sailing from Asia to Mexico’s Pacific coast, whether bound for Manzanillo or Lázaro Cárdenas, generally enter Mexican coastal waters from the eastern Pacific. Ships approaching their destination over the coming days could encounter stronger swells and cross seas as they near the coast.

From a dry bulk and breakbulk perspective, particular attention should be paid to steel, machinery, project cargoes and other industrial goods moving from Asia to Mexico, as well as mineral and metal exports moving in the opposite direction. Regional bulk trades between Mexico and the western coast of Central America could also be affected by deteriorating sea conditions.

A vessel does not need to enter the storm’s core to experience operational impacts. Swell conditions around the system can affect vessel speed and manoeuvrability and may complicate the final approach to port.

Ships scheduled to call at Manzanillo or Lázaro Cárdenas over the next several days should reconfirm sea conditions, pilotage arrangements and port-entry plans before approaching Mexico’s southwestern coast, and adjust ETAs where necessary.

Port Operations May Take Time to Return to Normal

Current forecasts indicate that Polo will remain offshore along Mexico’s Pacific coast for the next several days before gradually turning northwestward. While the risk of landfall remains low, the storm’s slow movement means that its influence on coastal waters could persist longer than that of a faster-moving tropical system.

Once winds and seas subside, ports will first need to restore normal pilotage, tug and vessel movement operations.

They will then need to work through vessels that have been delayed and reschedule berth windows. If previously delayed vessels arrive within a short period after restrictions are lifted, anchorages and berths could experience a temporary surge in demand.

If pilotage restrictions or longer anchorage waits emerge at Manzanillo, Lázaro Cárdenas or nearby ports over the coming days, the resulting delays could continue even after the storm itself weakens.

For vessels already underway or preparing to call at Mexico’s Pacific ports, shipowners and operators should continue monitoring port notices, marine forecasts and anchorage conditions.

The duration of the disruption will ultimately depend not only on how quickly Polo moves away or weakens, but also on how efficiently ports can clear any accumulated vessel traffic and restore normal schedules.
