In the second quarter of 2026, global seaborne coal trade picked up notably. Industry statistics show that global seaborne coal volumes hit 353.1 million tonnes in Q2 2026, rising by 6% year-on-year. Within this total:
Among the four major coal-exporting nations, exports grew across most economies except Indonesia, with Australia delivering a particularly prominent volume increase.
Lloyd’s List has also documented this shift, noting that as El Niño intensifies, coal has become an unexpected beneficiary across bulk commodity shipping markets and offers support for Panamax and Supramax vessel segments.
Nevertheless, this rebound should not be interpreted as the return of a long-term upward cycle for global coal demand. For shipowners, the more important question is how cargo origins, destination markets and transport distances are changing as coal volumes increase.

Why Has Seaborne Coal Activity Surged Recently?
Much of the growth in Q2 coal volumes came from Asian power markets.
Rising temperatures have lifted electricity consumption, while constrained natural-gas supplies have prompted several Asian economies to ramp-up coal procurement. Against the backdrop of the global energy transition, coal is no longer at the centre of the energy mix, but it still plays a practical role in maintaining energy security when power demand rises rapidly or natural gas supplies and prices become uncertain.
From a shipowner’s perspective, this shift in demand matters more than a simple rise in coal prices.Higher coal prices can only improve cargo owners’ willingness to purchase coal. By contrast, dry-bulk vessel demand is fundamentally determined by two variables: whether coal needs to be transported across oceans, and how long those shipping routes are. Both variables are currently undergoing adjustments.
China’s July Import Spike: Why the Surge May Not Last
China recorded the strongest growth in coal imports among major markets in recent months. In July, China’s coal imports totalled 43.73 million tonnes (23% YoY increase), of which seaborne coal accounted for roughly 33.91 million tonnes — both figures represent high levels for this year.
Still, July’s strong import performance is driven partly by temporary factors. Safety inspections were tightened across domestic coal mines after an accident in Shanxi Province, which pulled down China’s domestic coal output by 9.7% year-on-year in June. Imported coal was used to fill part of the resulting supply gap. This support for imports may fade as domestic coal production gradually returns to normal.
Reuters projects that China’s seaborne coal imports in August may fall to approximately 31.23 million tonnes, lower than July’s reading. Meanwhile, thermal power generation accounted for only 49.7% of China’s total power output in H1 2026, as new-energy power generation keeps expanding.
Therefore, while China’s record-high July imports deserve monitoring, they cannot serve as a baseline for demand over coming months. Should China’s coal imports cool off, the resilience of seaborne coal shipping will hinge on whether demand from other Asian buyers can take over.
Falling Newcastle Exports: Signals of Divided Coal Trade Patterns
Port of Newcastle in Australia recorded coal exports of around 12.63 million tonnes in July: down 16.5% month-on-month and 7% year-on-year. The breakdown of July exports was as follows:
Looking solely at July figures might lead to the misjudgement that Australian coal demand is weakening. However, cumulative coal exports from Newcastle over January-July stood at 87.36 million tonnes (+7.6% YoY). In parallel, Asian seaborne thermal-coal imports hit 73.16 million tonnes in July, marking the third consecutive month of expansion.
The July decline at Newcastle should therefore be viewed as a short-term shift in buyers and supply sources rather than a reversal of Australia’s overall coal export trend.
For shipowners, key questions to monitor are where incremental coal cargoes will flow amid softening Northeast Asian demand, and which supply sources Asian purchasers will turn to. These shifts will directly shape future coal shipping distances.
Growing Risks of Strong El Niño
On 13 August, the United States’ NOAA upgraded its El Niño assessment. There is now a more than 90% probability of a very strong El Niño across the Northern Hemisphere for autumn-winter 2026; the chance for historically extreme El Niño conditions during October-December reaches 69%.
For coal markets, the critical factor is not higher temperatures per se, but whether reduced rainfall and weaker hydropower output will force greater reliance on coal-fired power generation across several Asian markets.
Early signs can already be observed in India:
Even so, India’s July thermal-coal imports totalled roughly 10.88 million tonnes, lower than earlier readings.
This indicates India is not yet a major volume contributor to the ongoing seaborne-coal rebound, yet it represents a key variable for the next phase. If El Niño strengthens further, reduced rainfall could weaken hydropower output while high temperatures drive up power demand, potentially leading to higher coal imports in India.
For shipping markets, more important than pure coal-consumption growth is whether Indian demand translates into actual import volumes, together with supply origins and corresponding shipping distances for those import cargoes.
Watch for Longer-Distance Cargo Flows
If Asian buyers keep sourcing coal from Indonesia (short-haul trade), the uplift for vessel demand will remain limited. In contrast, ton-mile demand could rise significantly even if overall coal trade grows only modestly, particularly if:
Below are key cargo-flow routes to watch over the coming one-to-three-month window:
Australia-India Route (Top Priority)
India’s domestic coal supply remains robust for now and import volumes have not picked up materially. That said, Drier conditions associated with El Niño could reduce hydropower output, while strong power demand may drive higher coal imports. Compared with Australia-Northeast Asia trades, this long-haul cargo flow exerts a more direct impact on vessel turnover and ton-mile demand.
Indonesia-China / Indonesia-India Route (Supply-Side Focus)
Monitor policy adjustments and export-quota constraints that may cap Indonesian coal output or exports. Should Indonesian supplies tighten, Asian purchasers may turn to alternative suppliers in Australia and South Africa. As previously noted by Lloyd’s List, supply constraints in Indonesia could drive buyers toward geographically more remote coal sources and extend average dry-bulk sailing distances.
South Africa-Asia Route (Potential Swing Factor)
If Indonesian supplies tighten alongside rising Indian coal imports, South African coal could capture greater market share within Asia. While such substitution may not deliver massive absolute cargo-volume gains, these long-distance voyages can contribute meaningfully to ton-mile demand.
Export volumes at Australia’s Port of Newcastle
July saw a 16.5% month-on-month drop, yet January-July cumulative exports advanced 7.6% year-on-year. Single-month July statistics are insufficient to signal a lasting reversal. Market participants should pay closer attention towhether export volumes recover in August and September and whether cargo destinations shift away from traditional Japan / South Korea markets toward farther-flung markets such as India.
Ultimately, shipowners should look beyond simple metrics of “rising or falling coal import tonnage”. Two questions are central:
Higher cargo tonnage alone may not move shipping markets meaningfully. Even modest coal-volume growth can deliver amplified support for dry-bulk markets if cargo sailing distances get longer.
How Far Can This Coal Rebound Go? The Answer Lies beyond Coal Itself
The seaborne coal market staged a better-than-expected rebound in the second quarter of 2026 with a 6% year-on-year rise in global trade volumes. Even so, this does not mark the return of a prolonged coal-market boom cycle.
China’s July import surge is driven by temporary factors; Indian coal imports have not yet expanded substantially. Power generation from new-energy sources continues to displace coal-fired output. Meanwhile, evolving El Niño conditions, Indonesian supply dynamics and Australian export schedules keep reshaping supply origins and destination markets for Asian coal trades.
Assuming Chinese coal imports moderate, resilience from Indian, Japanese and South-Korean buyers combined with partial shifts away from Indonesian coal toward longer-haul suppliers in Australia and South Africa can underpin ton-mile demand for Panamax / Kamsarmax and Supramax vessels, even with limited growth in total coal tonnage.
This is where El Niño could create a meaningful opportunity for the dry bulk market.
Over the next one to three months, market participants should closely monitor:
-Export performance on Australia’s east coast
-Indonesian coal-supply conditions
-India’s power-sector conditions and hydropower output
-Cargo-flow shifts along key lanes: Australia-India, Indonesia-Asia and South Africa-Asia
