At 16:53 local time on April 20, a powerful earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan (Sanriku offshore). According to revised data from the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake reached a magnitude of 7.7 with a focal depth of approximately 20 km, and a maximum seismic intensity of “Shindo 5 Upper.” Strong tremors were also felt in Tokyo.
